Born in Zürich in 1963. His first games criticism appeared in 1985 in the Aargauer Kurier newspaper. From 1987 to 2008, he was editor at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper (NZZ). In May 2008 he spent two years travelling around the world. Since his return he has worked as a freelance journalist, predominantly for the NZZ as a court reporter. Between 1997 and the end of 2016 he contributed weekly gaming columns to the NZZ supplement. Since autumn 2017 he has had weekly columns on the online media portal watson.ch.
He loves games because games (usually) have no impact on reality; they provide a balance to the chaos and seriousness of his day job, which often deals with life and death situations. He is fascinated by the possibility that a simple card game can bring people from all walks of life, from different age groups, with different languages and social and cultural origins, together around one table to enjoy themselves. He was a jury member from October 2000 to June 2008. After a two-year break he rejoined the jury from July 2010. Chair since January 2011.
