Born in 1950 and married with four children, Herold was head of a secondary school in Oldenburg until 2013. In 1984 he introduced his hobby to the school through setting up a games library, organising gaming afternoons and exhibitions as well as publishing the school’s own games newspaper Alea. He wrote games criticism for various daily papers and worked on diverse trade publications such as spielbox, Spielerei and the kindergarten-focussed klein&groß. Since 2015 he has also published online reviews on mit80.de.
Together with Reinhold Wittig he developed the concept for the magazine Spiel & Autor, which he has edited since 1989 and which is published by his wife Cordula. Herold considers his most important mission to be the development of young games designers. He tries to do this not only by jointly organising the annual games designer meet-up in Göttingen but also through his work with the “Spiel des Jahres” jury, to which he has belonged since 1994.
